Pellet Granulators

Pellet granulators are the core machines used in the production of this increasingly popular and environmentally friendly fuel. They form part of a technological line and are responsible for shaping raw material into the characteristic hard, cylindrical pellets.

What raw materials can be processed with a pellet press?

A pellet press plays a crucial role in the production of biofuels. When combined with a dryer, hammer mill and material-conditioning system, it enables efficient and economical pellet production from biomass. The pellet presses offered by COMERC are engineered for maximum efficiency and reliability. They use advanced technologies to ensure high product quality while reducing energy consumption and production time.

Wood biomass in the form of chips or sawdust remains the most popular raw material for pellet production. However, many other materials can also be pelletized, including straw, peat, sunflower husks, nutshells or other organic waste. Pellet quality depends heavily on proper preparation of the feedstock — i.e., the degree of grinding, cleaning and drying of the material using hammer mills, magnetic and pneumatic separators and drum or belt dryers.

The type of wood used also matters — especially its density and lignin content. For example: fir contains over 29 percent lignin; pine and beech over 27 percent; spruce around 27 percent; birch roughly 19 percent. Higher-density hardwood species typically produce pellets with greater calorific value than low-density softwoods. For heating purposes, certified pellets are recommended — those meeting the standards of DINplus or ENplus certification systems.

Pellet Granulator

How does a pellet granulator work?

A granulator — also known as a pellet press or pelleting machine — operates using high temperature and high pressure. A perforated ring die or flat die (matrix) and rollers compress the material, forcing it through the die holes. This reduces its volume and forms small cylindrical pellets. The final pellet diameter depends directly on the diameter of the die holes used in the granulator.

Applications of pellet granulators across industries

Pellet granulators are used across numerous sectors. In the energy industry they are essential for producing eco-friendly fuel. In agriculture they are used for manufacturing animal feed. Thanks to their ability to process diverse raw materials, the machines are also widely used in recycling, where they help reduce the volume of waste. Regardless of the sector, granulators from our offer guarantee high productivity and stable quality.

Choosing the right pellet granulator

Choosing the right pellet granulator is crucial for the efficiency and profitability of the production process. The correct machine selection depends on several key factors that should be evaluated before making a decision. First, it is important to consider the type of raw material to be processed and choose a granulator designed specifically to handle that material. When selecting a granulator, it is also worth paying attention to its output capacity and the ability to adjust operating parameters such as temperature and pressure.

It is equally beneficial to supplement the machine park with additional biomass-processing equipment such as chippers, moisture-stabilization systems or buffer tanks. When choosing a granulator and other machines, it is best to opt for durable, efficient and user-friendly equipment from reputable manufacturers. Availability of spare parts and service support is another critical aspect.

Pellet Granulators – CPM DD

Pellet Granulators – CPM DD

The new generation of CPM Direct Drive (DD) granulators from Germany has been designed to pelletize even the most demanding materials under harsh conditions and within a limited footprint — while meeting all production standards. One of their key applications is wood pellet production.

CPM granulators are the world’s first pellet mills engineered specifically for biomass — including wood biomass — that use a direct-drive system, with no gearbox or belts. The high torque produced by the motors ensures excellent throughput while saving up to 20 percent energy compared with traditional drive systems.

Combined with the new steam-conditioning system, CPM granulators provide an optimal solution not only for biomass but also for classic feedstock materials, such as hulls and post-extraction meal in the oil-processing industry.

Advantages of CPM pellet mills:

– robust, durable construction
– direct drive (no gearbox, no belts)
– higher torque than traditional drive systems
– adjustable die speed with no torque loss
– excellent pellet quality and high PDI (Pellet Durability Index)
– easy quality control via sampling at the granulator door
– up to 20 percent lower energy consumption
– reduced operating costs and simple maintenance
– very short startup time
– smallest footprint in their class
– available with or without a control system

A major advantage of all CPM granulators is their modular design and their wide die-speed range (4 to 8 m/s) without torque loss. This ensures full compliance with even the most demanding pellet-production standards. CPM granulators deliver excellent pellet quality with high PDI values.
